VA disability compensation is a monthly, tax-free benefit paid to veterans with disabilities connected to their military service. To receive it, a veteran files a claim establishing that a current condition is connected to an in-service event, injury, or illness, and the VA assigns a combined disability rating (in increments of 10%) based on medical evidence. Payment amounts scale with the combined rating and can increase for dependents at higher rating levels. Because rating decisions depend heavily on the completeness of medical evidence and service records, many veterans work with a VA-accredited representative — a Veterans Service Officer (VSO), agent, or attorney — to prepare and file their claim.
