TRICARE For Life and Medicare Coordination

Last reviewed February 10, 2025

TRICARE For Life provides wraparound coverage to Medicare with no separate TRICARE enrollment fee once a retiree becomes entitled to Medicare Part A and enrolls in Medicare Part B, typically around age 65.

Retirees who become entitled to Medicare Part A and enroll in Medicare Part B — generally around age 65 — become eligible for TRICARE For Life, which acts as wraparound coverage to Medicare with no separate TRICARE enrollment fee, though standard Medicare Part B premiums still apply. Timing the Medicare Part B enrollment correctly is important: delaying enrollment past your eligibility date without other qualifying coverage can result in a permanent late-enrollment premium surcharge and a gap in TRICARE For Life eligibility. Retirees approaching Medicare age should review their options with TRICARE and the Social Security Administration well ahead of their 65th birthday to avoid an enrollment gap.
