Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Overview

TAP is a DOD-mandated pre-separation program covering VA benefits, financial planning, and one of four individualized career tracks, capped by a Capstone readiness review.

The Transition Assistance Program is a Department of Defense-mandated curriculum most active-duty service members must complete before separating or retiring. It begins with pre-separation counseling — required within 365 days of separation for most members — followed by core curriculum modules covering VA benefits, financial planning, and one of four individualized tracks: Employment, Vocational Training, Higher Education, or Entrepreneurship. The program concludes with a Capstone event, where the member's command verifies they meet Career Readiness Standards. Reserve and National Guard members not on qualifying active-duty orders may have different or abbreviated requirements — check with your installation's TAP office for your specific timeline.
