Thrift Savings Plan (TSP): What Happens at Retirement

Last reviewed February 1, 2025

TSP balances remain in the account after retirement and continue to be managed and withdrawn under TSP's own rules, separate from military retired pay and VA benefits.

The Thrift Savings Plan is a federal defined-contribution retirement savings account available to all service members, and under BRS it also receives automatic and matching government contributions. Separating or retiring from the military does not require withdrawing your TSP balance — funds can remain invested in the plan indefinitely, subject to TSP's own withdrawal and required-minimum-distribution rules, and continue to be managed through the TSP website. Members should review their fund allocations, beneficiary designations, and withdrawal options (partial withdrawals, installment payments, or a full distribution) well before deciding how to handle their account after leaving service, and consider how TSP fits alongside retired pay and any VA compensation as part of an overall retirement income picture.
