DOD SkillBridge: Civilian Job Training Before You Separate

SkillBridge lets eligible service members spend up to their final 180 days of service in an approved civilian training, apprenticeship, or internship while still receiving military pay and benefits.

DOD SkillBridge is an internship/training authorization that allows eligible separating service members to spend up to the final 180 days of their service participating in an approved civilian training program, apprenticeship, or internship, while continuing to receive their military salary and benefits. Participation requires command approval and an agreement between the service and the SkillBridge industry partner, and it is not automatic — commands weigh mission requirements when approving requests. Programs are listed and vetted through the official DOD SkillBridge directory. Because approval and slot availability vary by installation, unit, and program, members typically need to start the SkillBridge application and approval process 6 months or more before their target start date.
