Preparing for BDD — Without Claims Advice

Service members who plan to seek VA disability compensation sometimes use the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) process. According to VA public materials, BDD claims are typically submitted when a member has a known separation date and between 180 and 90 days remaining on active duty, along with other eligibility conditions such as being available for exams and providing service treatment records and required Separation Health Assessment paperwork. Missing that window does not mean a claim cannot be filed — it usually means a different claims process after (or closer to) separation. Useful preparation that is not itself claims advice includes creating a VA.gov account, gathering complete medical records, listing conditions you want documented, and speaking with a VA-accredited representative or VSO about whether BDD fits your situation.
