DEERS and Dependent ID Cards After Separation

DEERS eligibility records must be kept current for retirees and dependents to keep TRICARE, base access, and ID-card privileges accurate after separation or retirement.

The Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) is the database that determines whether a service member, retiree, or dependent is eligible for TRICARE, base access, and other military benefits. Life events — marriage, divorce, a dependent turning 21 (or 23 if a full-time student), or the sponsor's separation or retirement — all require a DEERS update, usually made at a local ID card office (RAPIDS site) or, for some changes, through milConnect. Retirees' dependent family members typically need new or updated dependent ID cards reflecting the sponsor's retired status; failing to update DEERS promptly can cause a lapse in TRICARE eligibility or denied base access. Plan a visit to an ID card office in the weeks around your separation or retirement date.
