Blended Retirement System (BRS) Overview
BRS combines a reduced defined-benefit pension (2.0% per year of service) with automatic and matching government TSP contributions, plus a mid-career Continuation Pay bonus.
The Blended Retirement System applies automatically to anyone who entered military service on or after January 1, 2018, and was optional for many who were already serving. BRS blends three components: a defined-benefit annuity calculated at 2.0% per year of service (versus 2.5% under legacy systems) for those who serve 20+ years; government automatic (1%) and matching (up to an additional 4%) contributions to the member's Thrift Savings Plan, which vest and belong to the member even if they separate before 20 years; and a one-time Continuation Pay bonus typically paid between 8 and 12 years of service in exchange for an additional service commitment. Because TSP contributions accrue and vest regardless of whether a member reaches 20 years, BRS is generally more favorable than legacy systems for members who separate before retirement eligibility.
